Primary Productivity
Primary productivity is the rate
at which photosynthesis occurs. This determines the rate at which biomass
increases within an ecosystem. There are two types of primary productivity, net
primary productivity and gross primary productivity.
Net primary productivity: the rate at which producers use photosynthesis to produce and store chemical energy minus the rate at which they use some of this for their own respiration.
Gross primary productivity: is the rate at which the primary producers in an ecosystem convert suns energy into chemical energy in the form of biomass found in their tissues.
